Backcountry - touring skiing

When you think of backcountry skiing or touring skiing it comes to your mind: mountains, ungroomed virgin snow, unbelievable landscape and leaving a trace with your skis where nobody has skied there before! There is an 'unwritten rule' in backcountry skiing if we ski in groups we must never pass on someone else trace, each one leaves its own mark on the mountain.

The backcountry skiing season in Patagonia (Chile & Argentina) goes from August to October in some areas even in November.

We offer backcountry skiing in South America (The Andes) in two areas: South Patagonia (El Chaltén surrounding area) and North Patagonia (San Carlos de Bariloche nearby area and the volcanoes in Chile). You may choose from full day ski advetures and hut to hut skiing or backcountry ski expeditions of several days with expert local ski guides.

You have to have a good ski level skills and training for backcountry skiing programs. Please check our difficulty grading chart!

One day backcountry skiing options in Bariloche nearby area

If you would like to explore different backcountry skiing options in Bariloche we have four full day touring skiing programs starting from Bariloche in the morning returning in the late afternoon or early evening.

We may offer you off-piste skiing in the Catedral ski resort(La Lagunita area) or at the Van Titter valley a full day backcountry skiing. We have also a Challhuaco mountain touring skiing full day outing and at Puyehue Pass (Chilean border) full day backcountry skiing at cerro Mirador. Frey Ski Area: 3 days backcountry ski trip

Difficulty: Demanding / Tough
Season: July to September
Required minimum age: 21 years

You can't miss Frey at Catedral mountain if you are in Bariloche and love back country skiing. Spectacultar Andean scene. Amazing couloirs and slopes, for intermediate and expert skiers.

Catedral Frey- Jakob: 3 days backcountry ski trip

Duration: 3 day
Difficulty: Tough
Season: July to September
Required minimum age: 21 years

Hut to hut touring ski trip expedition starting from Bariloche at the Andes. Visiting Frey and Jakob mountain hut where we stay for the night. Great 360° mountain views while enjoying awesome ski lines. Amazing slopes and traverses, for experts skiers.

Volcano Osorno: 3 days touring ski expedition

Duration: 3 days
Difficulty: Moderate
Season: July to September
Minimum required age: 21 years

Starting from San Carlos de Bariloche we cross the boarder to Chile where our ski expedition begins combining great backcountry skiing on volcanoes with great views of the Andes and the Pacific ocean. Staying at cozy mountain hut with great chilean food.

Volcanoes Casablanca & Puyehue.

Duration: 5 days
Difficulty: Moderate
Season: August to October
Minimum required age: 21 years

Starting from San Carlos de Bariloche we cross the boarder to Chile where our skiing adventure begins combining great skiing on volcanoes during the day, with hot spring baths at night. Amazing views, with clear days, you see even the Pacific ocean. Staying at cozy mountain lodges

Volcanoes Lonquimay and Llaima

Duration: 5 days
Difficulty: Moderate ski and training level
Season: August to October
Minimum required age: 21 years

From San Carlos de Bariloche crossing the boarder to Chle. Skiing adventure combining great volcano backcountry skiing, some mountaineering and hot spring baths with delicious ethnic meals. Amazing views to the surrounding volcanoes, araucaria forest (indigenous primitive pine trees) with lodging in mountain lodges.

South Patagonia backcountry skiing (starting point at El Chaltén)

Paso Guillaumet- De los Tres glacier Circuit

Duration: 1 day ( may be done in 2 days to make it easier)
Difficulty: Tough - high ski level
Season: October to November
We start early from El Chalten, hiking to Piedra del Fraile and Piedra Negra where we put up our skis going up to paso Guillaumet and Superior along Fitz Roy range from there backcountry skiing downhill with the best views of Paso Marconi and ice cap.

Cerro Vespignani

Duration: 1 day
Difficulty: Tough
Season: October to November

Cerro Gorra Blanca 2920 mts

Duration: 8 days
Difficulty: Tough
Season: whole year

Mountain located at the Ice Cap, easy access, close to Paso Marconi. This is not a very technical mountain to climb since it's location, however we'll give this ascension the commitment that a great Andean climb involves. The days at the Ice Cap we will have to melt snow to drink and build protections with snow blocks for the tents.
