The mountaineering season in Southern Patagonia begins in November ending mid March.

Cerro Madsen

 Dificultad:  Moderate     Duración: 1 Day

Satellite mountain of Fitz Roy range.

Itinerary:

Early departure from Chalten, Rio Blanco trail to Laguna de los Tres. From there we start to ascent. Depending the time of the year, we will use snowshoes, ropes and safety gear, or simply hiking shoes.

Cerro Eléctrico

Day 1: We leave El Chaltén in the afternoon, we go to the base camp of Cerro Eléctrico, on the west bank of the Eléctrico River, where we will spend the night. (D)

Day 2: At dawn we will begin our ascent, starting from the camp, crossing a stream, we begin to climb the waterfall that comes down from Cerro Eléctrico, which will deposit us at the base of the glacier. This is where we rope ourselves and cross the glacier, crossing different cracks, and in the last part a small rock climb, which will take us to the summit. We return to El Chaltén. Estimated round trip time: 12 hrs (B-L)

Cerro Vespignani

Itinerary: 

Start ascent at dawn, we departure from El Chaltén by car to Lago del Desierto (38 km). There we start towering main glacier, which, after crossing few snow bridges and cracks, will lead us to the top, where we will have an outstanding view of the Ice Cap and Fitz Roy range. Estimate round trip: 10 hrs. (B-L).

Day 3: Trekking – La Playita-Fraile-Río Eléctrico. Transfer to El Chalten.

Last camp for climbers attempting the Fitz Roy summit. Spending the night bivouacking in snow caves waiting for the right weather conditions.

Day 1: Trek from ElChaltén to Rio Blanco basecamp. Set up tents for camping. Trekking time: 3 hrs. (D)

Day 2: Hike up to Paso Superior, towering “de los tres” glacier, where we will dig a snow cave to spend the night bivouacking. Trekking time: 7 hrs. (B-L-D)

Day 3: If weather allows, visit Superior glacier, closest spot to Fitz Roy east wall. Back to Chaltén. Trekking time: 9 hrs. (B-L)

Day 2: At dawn, begin ascent, towering Solo river which will lead us to the glacier base. At that point we start climbing the glacier to the top. Back to Chalten. Estimate rountrip: 12 hrs (B-L)
